Place du Marché aux Cochons de Lait
A postcard-perfect little square whose charming name means the Market of the Suckling Pigs. Leaning half-timbered houses and cafe terraces ring the cobbles where piglets were once bought and sold.
Su questo luogo
The Place du Marche aux Cochons de Lait takes its name from the suckling pigs, and later pork of every kind, once traded on its cobbles. Ringed by tall timber-framed houses, the square distils the commercial and craft history of old Strasbourg, where merchants and artisans lived above the workshops and shops that filled the ground floors. The galleried half-timbered house at number one dates from the early seventeenth century, while the Renaissance house at number eight sheltered generations of the same merchant family for more than two hundred and fifty years. Today its terraces are among the most photographed and most convivial spots in the city, especially during the famous Christmas market.
