The Crackdown That Never Came - Nikolaikirche

On the night of 9 October 1989, over 70,000 Leipzigers filled this churchyard and the surrounding streets while thousands of armed police, soldiers, and militia stood ready across the city. The order to advance was never given, and the crackdown the regime had prepared in careful detail simply did not happen.

Su questo luogo

The Nikolaikirche has been the spiritual heart of Leipzig's resistance since 1982, when a series of weekly Monday Peace Prayers began drawing quiet dissenters beneath its pale stone columns and neo-Gothic vaults. By the autumn of 1989, those modest gatherings had grown into a mass movement that the state could no longer contain. On 9 October, the night the regime came closest to violent repression, hospitals across Leipzig were put on standby, blood reserves were ordered, and thousands of armed units took up positions around the city. Inside the church, the service continued as normal while 70,000 people filled the Nikolaikirchhof and the surrounding ring road. Six Leipzig citizens, among them the conductor Kurt Masur, broadcast a plea for non-violence over the city loudspeakers, and the security forces held back. What followed in the weeks after that one extraordinary Monday was a cascade: 120,000 the next week, 320,000 by late October, and on 9 November, the Berlin Wall. The Nikolaikirchhof did not witness the crime that was prepared for it. It witnessed its refusal.
