True Crime Leipzig
Stasi Spies, Forged Fortunes, and a Public Execution
Di cosa parla la passeggiata?
Leipzig wears its beauty like a disguise. Beneath the soaring Gothic spires, the elegant Baroque facades, and the tree-lined ring that encircles the old town lies a city shaped by secrets, crimes, and moments of breathtaking courage. From a forging mayor locked away for forty-one years without a verdict, to the secret police who steamed open a thousand letters a day and kept jars of people's body smell for their tracker dogs — and a public execution on the main square that shocked a city into silence — Leipzig's landmarks have witnessed it all. This walk traces the crimes hidden in plain sight across the compact old town, connecting some of the city's most iconic addresses to the cases that left their mark on them.

Riot on the Revolution Square - Augustusplatz

Leipzig's grandest square, flanked by the Gewandhaus concert hall and the Opera, was the flashpoint for Germany's most polarising anti-lockdown rally in November 2020. A crowd of roughly 20,000 gathered here, ignored mandatory mask rules, broke through a police cordon, and then marched along the very ring road that the 1989 Monday demonstrators had made famous.
