The Lake Chapel of St. George (Seekapelle)

A small Baroque chapel near the lakeshore, built to honour a medieval battlefield victory. It is one of the oldest sacred sites in Bregenz, dedicated to Saint George.

About this place

The Seekapelle, or Lake Chapel, is a modest but treasured Baroque jewel standing where the lakefront gives way to the old town. It was founded by the city of Bregenz in the fifteenth century to commemorate the bloody Battle of Bregenz of 1408, when the townspeople fought off the rebellious Appenzell forces. Dedicated to Saint George, the patron of soldiers, the chapel was enlarged and remodelled in elegant Baroque style at the end of the seventeenth century by the master builder Christian Thumb. Inside waits its greatest treasure, a richly carved Renaissance high altar from 1615. Compact and quiet, the Seekapelle offers an intimate counterpoint to the lake and a gentle threshold into the historic streets climbing above.
