About this place
Herrengasse, or 'Gentlemen’s Alley,' has been Graz's most prestigious artery for centuries, flanked by aristocratic palaces and filled with the gentle rumble of passing trams. On a normal day, it is a picturesque, carefree pedestrian zone. But on the sunny afternoon of June 20, 2015, this historic avenue became a sudden, chaotic nightmare. In a deliberate and senseless act of violence, a man weaponized his SUV, accelerating to high speeds and steering directly into the dense weekend crowds. Panic erupted as the vehicle tore down the shopping street, leaving a horrific trail of devastation in its wake. Three people were killed—including a four-year-old boy—and 34 others were severely injured. A massive police and medical response instantly transformed the heart of Graz into a chilling triage center. The sheer scale of this rampage deeply traumatized the city, leaving a permanent scar on its most beautiful street and proving how quickly a normal afternoon can shatter into a mass-casualty crime scene.
