Haus der Musik

The founding place of the Vienna Philharmonic. It celebrates the transition from imperial court orchestras to democratic, self-governing ensembles.

About this place

The Haus der Musik is located in the former palace of Archduke Charles. It was here that Otto Nicolai lived and where, in 1842, he founded the Vienna Philharmonic. This was a radical idea: an orchestra governed by the musicians themselves, making their own artistic and financial decisions. Today, it is an interactive sound museum, but its historical significance lies in the birth of one of the world's greatest orchestras.
