Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial

A concrete memorial known as the Nameless Library, dedicated to the 65,000 Austrian Jews murdered in the Holocaust. It stands as a silent, sealed archive of lost lives.

About this place

The Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial is a somber concrete structure that stands in contrast to the Baroque buildings surrounding it. Created by Rachel Whiteread, it represents a library whose books are turned inward, signifying the silence and loss of the 65,000 Austrian Jews murdered by the Nazis. The names of the death camps are inscribed at the base. The memorial sits directly above the archaeological remains of a medieval synagogue, linking the 20th century genocide with the city’s long history of anti Jewish persecution.
