The Narrenturm

The 'Fool's Tower', a chilling 18th-century fortress built to lock up the mentally ill, representing the brutal era of psychiatry Freud overthrew.

About this place

The Narrenturm, literally translated as the 'Fool's Tower', is a chilling, circular five-story fortress built in 1784. It holds the dark distinction of being the world's first dedicated psychiatric hospital. However, it resembles a prison far more than a clinic, featuring 139 solitary confinement cells arranged in a ring. While it was becoming obsolete during Freud's time, it stood as a massive, looming symbol of the old, brutal way of treating the 'mad': locking them away, chaining them to walls, and treating them like animals. Freud's invention of the 'talking cure' was a direct, radical rebellion against this physical containment of the mind.
