Palais Lobkowitz

The baroque palace where Beethoven's 'Eroica' Symphony was first performed. It was here that music changed from polite entertainment to a revolutionary force.

About this place

Palais Lobkowitz is one of the most significant sites in music history. It was the home of Prince Franz Joseph Maximilian von Lobkowitz, one of Beethoven's most important patrons. In the grand 'Eroica Hall' on the first floor, Beethoven conducted the private premiere of his Third Symphony in 1804. This piece shattered all conventions of length, complexity, and emotional depth, marking the transition from the Classical to the Romantic era. The Prince eventually went bankrupt supporting Beethoven and other artists.
