Sigmund Freud Museum

Berggasse 19, the holy grail of psychology. This is where psychoanalysis was invented, dreams were interpreted, and where Freud was forced to flee the Nazis.

About this place

We have reached the sanctum: Berggasse 19. Sigmund Freud lived and worked in this exact apartment building from 1891 until his forced flight from the Nazis in 1938. It was in these high-ceilinged rooms that he wrote his masterpiece 'The Interpretation of Dreams,' hosted the Wednesday Psychological Society, and treated his patients on the world-famous couch. The museum today preserves the space beautifully, though the original furniture is largely in London, leaving a powerful 'museum of absence' that deeply evokes the loss caused by the Holocaust.
