The Sühnhaus Site

The site of the notorious 'Atonement House' where Freud opened his first struggling private practice in a building many considered deeply cursed.

About this place

Located at Schottenring 7, this modern building stands on the site of the former Sühnhaus (Atonement House). It was built directly over the ashes of the catastrophic Ringtheater fire of 1881, which killed hundreds of people in a horrific blaze. Emperor Franz Joseph commissioned the residential building as a gesture of expiation. Freud moved here in 1886 as a newlywed with his wife Martha. It was here that he struggled to build a private practice in a building that superstitious Viennese deeply avoided due to its grim, ghostly history.
