About this place
The massive, neo-Renaissance main building of the University of Vienna was the center of Freud's professional ambition and his deepest, most agonizing frustrations. He entered as a brilliant, eager medical student in 1873, but quickly faced a medical establishment rife with intense conservatism and rising antisemitism. It took him an unusually long, humiliating seventeen years to be appointed as a Professor Extraordinarius, a delay caused directly by his Jewish heritage and his highly controversial, sexually focused theories. Today, the beautiful Arkadenhof courtyard finally honors him with a bronze bust.
