Altstadt & Bolkerstraße

The beating heart of Düsseldorf, a tight knot of medieval lanes famous as 'the longest bar in the world'. Along Bolkerstraße alone, more than fifty taverns, breweries and restaurants stand shoulder to shoulder.

About this place

Squeezed into barely half a square kilometre between the Rhine and the Königsallee, Düsseldorf's Altstadt packs an astonishing amount of life into a handful of narrow streets. Its nickname, the longest bar in the world, is not one continuous counter but a poetic tally of the roughly two hundred and sixty pubs, breweries, bars and restaurants crammed into the old town. At its centre runs the Bolkerstraße, one of the city's oldest thoroughfares, laid out when the medieval town plan was first drawn and lined today with copper-topped brewery taverns pouring the dark, top-fermented Altbier that is Düsseldorf's civic pride. Almost flattened in the Second World War, the quarter was patiently rebuilt to its old footprint, so that gabled facades, cobbled alleys and the smell of malt still evoke the trading town it has been for centuries.
