Zum Uerige
A rambling, wood panelled brewery tavern in the heart of the Altstadt where copper green Altbier is still poured straight from oak casks. This is the beating heart of Düsseldorf's beer culture, loud, smoky in spirit, and utterly beloved.
About this place
Tucked into Berger Strasse in the old town, Zum Uerige is the most famous of Düsseldorf's traditional house breweries. Since 1862 it has brewed its dark, copper coloured Altbier on the premises and served it the old fashioned way, tapped from wooden barrels and carried through a warren of intimate, dimly lit rooms by blue aproned waiters called Köbes. The name Uerige means 'the grumpy one' in the local dialect, a nickname earned by the tavern's cantankerous founder. Today it is a rite of passage for every visitor, a place where locals, tourists, students and businesspeople stand shoulder to shoulder at worn wooden counters, each guest's tally scratched in pencil on a beer mat.
