Allerheiligenkirche (All Saints' Church)

A slender Gothic hall church at the fork of two medieval streets, its walls deliberately skewed to fit the plot, crowned by the tallest tower in Erfurt's old town and home since 2007 to Germany's first Catholic columbarium.

About this place

Founded in 1117 as an Augustinian foundation with an attached hospital, the Allerheiligenkirche has stood at the junction of Marktstraße and Allerheiligenstraße for nine centuries, rebuilt in Gothic style after a devastating fire in 1222 left the old town in ashes. Its 53-metre west tower, the tallest church tower in the old town, has survived three lightning strikes and as many rebuildings. Since 2007 its northern aisle has held Germany's first Catholic columbarium, fifteen limestone columns of urn niches open to Christians and non-believers alike, a strikingly modern chapter for one of Erfurt's oldest churches.
