Koenigstrasse

Stuttgart's grand pedestrian boulevard, a 1.2 kilometre ribbon of shops, cafes and street music that links the main station to Schlossplatz. It is one of the longest and liveliest shopping streets in all of Germany.

About this place

Running dead straight through the heart of the city, the Koenigstrasse, or King's Street, is Stuttgart's central artery and its living room rolled into one. It takes its name from the Kingdom of Wuerttemberg, whose rulers once paraded along this route between the royal palace and their country estates. For most of the twentieth century it carried trams and cars, but a bold redesign for the 1977 Federal Garden Show turned its lower stretch into a car free promenade of fountains, trees and kiosks. Today roughly two hundred shops, department stores and cafes line its length, and on a busy Saturday a river of shoppers, buskers and tourists flows past the sandstone facades. It is the connective thread of any Stuttgart visit, linking the main station at one end to the palace squares of the Old Town at the other.
