About this place
The Mercado Central de Abastos of Cádiz, built in 1838, is considered the oldest covered market in Spain. A handsome neoclassical structure, a rectangle of columns around a central courtyard, it was recently and beautifully restored, and remains the vibrant heart of the city's food culture. And in a city surrounded by the sea, that means, above all, fish and seafood. The market's stalls overflow with the magnificent catch of the Cádiz coast and the Bay of Cádiz: tuna from the traditional almadraba nets, prawns, sea bream, sole, cuttlefish, clams and much more, among the finest seafood in Spain. One corner of the market, the rincón gastronómico, has become famous as a place where stalls serve freshly prepared seafood tapas and sushi to eat on the spot. Lively, authentic and delicious, it is a must for any lover of food.
