About this place
The Puerta del Puente, the Gate of the Bridge, is a handsome Renaissance monument standing where the Roman bridge meets the old city, in the square known as the Plaza del Triunfo. For two thousand years a gate has guarded this spot, first a Roman one, then the great gate of the Moorish city. The present structure, a dignified triumphal arch with paired columns, was designed in the sixteenth century by the architect Hernán Ruiz, partly to honour a visit by King Philip the Second. Beside it rises the tallest of the city's columns to the Archangel Raphael, the Triunfo de San Rafael. The gate frames the transition from the river and the bridge into the dense historic core, and from the top, now open to visitors, there are fine views over the bridge, the river and the Mosque-Cathedral.
