About this place
The Monestir de Sant Pere de Galligants, Saint Peter of the Galligants, is one of the finest Romanesque buildings in Catalonia, a former Benedictine monastery dating mainly from the twelfth century, standing just beyond the old city walls beside the little Galligants stream. Its church is a lovely example of Catalan Romanesque, solid and harmonious, with a beautiful rose window set into its facade and an elegant octagonal bell tower. Beside the church lies a serene cloister, its arcades resting on paired columns whose carved capitals are decorated with foliage, animals, biblical scenes and fantastical creatures, a delight to examine. Since the nineteenth century the monastery has housed the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia in Girona, which displays finds from the region spanning prehistory, the Greeks and Romans and the medieval period, so a visit combines fine Romanesque architecture with a journey through the deep history of the land.
