About this place
The Carrera del Darro is, for many, the single most beautiful street in Granada and one of the loveliest in all of Spain. It runs along the bank of the little river Darro, squeezed into the narrow valley between the hill of the Albaicín, the old Moorish quarter, and the wooded slopes of the Alhambra rising opposite. Narrow and cobbled, it is lined with handsome Renaissance houses, convents and old mansions, and crossed by a series of ancient stone bridges. As you walk along it, the water murmurs beside you, and through gaps between the buildings you catch sudden, breathtaking glimpses up through the trees to the red towers of the Alhambra on the opposite ridge. Steeped in romance and much painted and photographed, it leads on to the open riverside promenade of the Paseo de los Tristes.
