Parc de la Mar

A seafront park with a large artificial lake that mirrors the great cathedral, created when the coastal road was built, and decorated with a ceramic mural by the artist Joan Miró.

About this place

The Parc de la Mar is a popular seafront park stretching below the walls of Palma's cathedral, created in the 1980s when a busy ring road was routed along the coast and the space between it and the old city was reclaimed and landscaped. Its centrepiece is a large artificial saltwater lake, deliberately designed so that the towering cathedral is reflected in its still surface, creating the city's most iconic and photographed view. The park is dotted with palm trees, cafes, modern sculpture and a large ceramic mural designed by the great Catalan and Mallorcan artist Joan Miró, who spent much of his life on the island. Lively with locals and visitors strolling, it is the perfect place to begin a walk, gazing up at the honey-coloured cathedral glowing above its own reflection.
