Playa de la Concha

The golden, shell-shaped beach that is the symbol of San Sebastián, lined by an elegant white Belle Époque railing and sheltered within one of the most beautiful city bays in the world.

About this place

The Playa de la Concha, the Shell Beach, is the heart and symbol of San Sebastián, consistently rated among the finest city beaches in Europe. It takes its name from its perfect shell-like curve, a golden arc of sand wrapped around a sheltered bay, guarded at either end by the green hills of Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo, with the little island of Santa Clara floating in the middle of the water. Behind the sand runs the famous promenade with its graceful white wrought-iron railing, a classic image of the city dating from its golden age as a fashionable royal resort around 1900, when Spanish high society and the queen regent came here to take the sea air. Elegant, sheltered and beautiful in every season, the bay is where San Sebastián comes to stroll, swim and simply admire one of the loveliest views in Spain.
