Mercado de Abastos

Santiago's magnificent granite food market, the second most-visited sight in the city after the cathedral, overflowing with the extraordinary seafood, produce and specialities of Galicia.

About this place

The Mercado de Abastos is the great food market of Santiago and, remarkably, the second most-visited attraction in the city after the cathedral itself. Housed in a handsome building of long granite halls, rebuilt in 1941 in a style echoing the local Romanesque architecture, it is a working market where the people of Santiago shop and where the magnificent produce of Galicia is displayed in all its glory. And what produce it is. Galicia is one of the great gastronomic regions of Spain, blessed above all by the sea: the market's fish and shellfish stalls overflow with the catch of the Atlantic rías, from octopus and goose barnacles to scallops, spider crabs, clams and fish of every kind. Alongside are stalls of Galician beef, the creamy tetilla cheese, Padrón peppers, empanadas and local wines. Some stalls will even cook your purchases for you on the spot, making this a wonderful place to end a walk with a feast.
