About this place
Beneath the Plaza de la Seo, right in front of the cathedral, lies the Museo del Foro de Caesaraugusta, an underground museum built around the excavated remains of the forum of Roman Zaragoza. The city was founded around 14 BC by the emperor Augustus himself, as a settlement for veteran soldiers, and named Caesaraugusta in his honour, a name that, worn down over twenty centuries, eventually became Zaragoza. The forum was the beating civic heart of that Roman city, its main square and marketplace, lined with shops and public buildings. Here, below modern street level, visitors walk among the foundations of those shops, a great sewer system, the bases of a market and the remains of a forum portico, brought vividly to life with an atmospheric sound-and-light presentation. It is one of several sites that together tell the story of Roman Caesaraugusta.
