Jardins de l'Europe

A leafy lakeside arboretum on the point where the Thiou canal meets Lac d'Annecy, laid out in 1863 and planted with giant sequoias, an ancient ginkgo, and hundreds of trees from around the world.

About this place

The Jardins de l'Europe sit on a former marshy island just beyond the medieval walls, transformed in 1863 into an elegant English-style garden by the landscape designer Henri Porreaux. Around 650 trees and a thousand shrubs were gathered here from Europe, America, and Asia, turning the point into a living arboretum of towering Californian sequoias, an ancient ginkgo biloba, and a Virginia tulip tree. Shaded paths wind beneath the canopy down to the water, where the little artificial Ile des Cygnes shelters swans just offshore. With the turquoise lake on one side and the Alps rising beyond, it is one of the loveliest corners of Annecy.
