About this place
Standing in the heart of the medieval upper town, the Altes Rathaus is one of the most photographed buildings in Bregenz. Built around 1662 by the local master Michael Kuen, its huge timber framed facade rises three storeys to a steep gabled roof dressed in red and white shutters, making it the largest half-timbered structure in the city. The name is a little misleading, because this house never functioned as the principal seat of government. Instead it guarded the city archives and gave lodging to the town clerk and other council servants. When the municipal administration moved down to the lower town in 1810, the old house slipped into private hands, where it remains a cherished residence today.
