About this place
Hidden inside the Graz Burg is the Doppelwendeltreppe, a double spiral staircase dating back to 1499. It is a marvel of Gothic engineering where two separate flights of stairs wind up around a hollow center, merging and parting at each level. Emperor Maximilian I commissioned this stonework masterpiece, which is often interpreted as a symbol of eternity or reconciliation. The staircase remains freely accessible and is a testament to the skill of medieval artisans.
