The Gazebo Viewpoint - 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen'

A little glass pavilion that launched a million photographs, where Liesl twirls through 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' and Maria later finds Something Good. The catch? It is not here, but four kilometres south in the gardens of Hellbrunn Palace.

About this place

Few film sets on earth are as instantly recognisable as the little glass gazebo of The Sound of Music, where two of the movie's love songs unfold. It was built for the 1964 production and first stood in the private grounds of Schloss Leopoldskron, but relentless fans trespassing for a glimpse eventually prompted the city to move it, in 1998, to the public park at Hellbrunn Palace, roughly four kilometres south of Salzburg's old town. There is a twist worthy of Hollywood itself: the famous dance sequences were never shot inside this pavilion, which proved far too cramped for the cameras, but were recreated on a California soundstage. And since a visitor broke her hip in 2010 attempting Liesl's bench to bench leap, the doors have stayed locked, leaving admirers to press their cameras to the glass.
