Altes AKH (Old General Hospital)

The sprawling medical complex where a young Freud worked as a resident, dissecting brains and conducting disastrous experiments with cocaine.

About this place

The Altes AKH was the city's primary hospital and the intense, grueling training ground for young Sigmund Freud. He worked here in various departments for three years, including the psychiatric clinic under the famous brain anatomist Theodor Meynert. It was in these dark laboratories that Freud conducted early neurological research and, most famously, experimented extensively with cocaine. He initially believed the drug was a harmless miracle cure for depression and fatigue, a disastrous mistake that would haunt his early reputation.
