Café Demel

The ultimate imperial bakery. Watch master pastry chefs behind glass as they craft candied violets, strudels, and the Emperor's legendary fluffy pancake.

About this place

Located on the elegant Kohlmarkt just steps from the Hofburg, Café Demel is a legendary Viennese institution founded in 1786. It proudly bears the title 'K.u.K. Hofzuckerbäcker' (Imperial and Royal Court Confectionery), meaning they were the official bakers to the Emperor. Walking into Demel is like stepping back in time, with its dark wood paneling, exquisite window displays, and waitresses (the 'Demelinerinnen') who still wear traditional black uniforms. Deep inside, a glass-walled kitchen allows you to watch master pastry chefs rolling out apple strudel and dusting powdered sugar over the famous Kaiserschmarrn.
