About this place
While the Deutschordenshaus is infamous for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's unceremonious dismissal in 1781, it holds a much warmer place in the heart of the Romantic era. In 1863, a thirty-year-old Johannes Brahms moved into a top-floor apartment here. It was his first permanent residence in Vienna. Here, Brahms took on the role of director for the Wiener Singakademie, working extensively with choral music and establishing himself not as a servant to the nobility, but as a deeply respected, independent successor to Beethoven.
