Sound of Vienna

An elegant Renaissance-style pavilion in the Stadtpark. Originally built as a health spa, Johann Strauss II transformed it into the city's premier dance hall.

About this place

Built between 1865 and 1867, the Kursalon was originally intended to provide the Viennese with mineral waters for their health. However, a strict 'no dancing' rule was quickly shattered when Johann Strauss II gave his first concert here in 1868. The music was simply too infectious. Today, the building hosts the 'Sound of Vienna' concert series, keeping the exuberant tradition of the Strauss dynasty's waltzes and polkas alive in the exact hall where the Waltz King himself once performed.
