About this place
The Stadttempel is the spiritual heart of Jewish Vienna, but its survival is due to a historical paradox. Built in 1826, imperial law forbade non-Catholic churches from having a visible street entrance. It was hidden inside a block of apartments. On the night of the November Pogrom in 1938, this hidden location saved it. Nazis feared that burning it would destroy the Aryan homes next door. While the interior was desecrated, the building stood, witnessing the destruction of the community it served.
