Volksgarten

A perfectly manicured imperial rose garden featuring an ancient Greek temple replica and a poignant, hidden memorial to the tragically assassinated Empress Sisi.

About this place

The Volksgarten (People's Garden) was laid out in 1821 over the ruins of city fortifications destroyed by Napoleon. It was the very first park in Vienna specifically designed to be open to the general public, rather than exclusively for the royal family. Today, it is famous for its impeccably manicured lawns, the striking Theseus Temple (a perfect replica of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens), and over 3,000 meticulously maintained rose bushes. Tucked quietly in a shaded corner is a beautifully melancholic marble memorial to Empress Elisabeth (Sisi).
