About this place
Strung along a sandstone ridge high above Lucerne's rooftops, the Musegg Wall was raised around the year 1400 in the uneasy decades after the Battle of Sempach, when the young Swiss Confederation was still asserting itself against the Habsburgs. Nearly eight hundred metres long and around nine metres high, it once bristled with roughly thirty watchtowers; nine of them still stand today, almost untouched by time. Four of the towers welcome visitors in the warmer months, among them the Zytturm with the oldest tower clock in central Switzerland, and a walk along the ramparts rewards you with a sweeping panorama over the Old Town, the lake, and the distant Alps.
