Market Square (Marktplatz)

Bremen's grand cobbled heart, ringed by the golden Town Hall, the towering knight Roland, and the merchants' guild house. For over a thousand years this open space has been the stage for the city's trade, justice, and civic pride.

About this place

The Marktplatz is the ceremonial and geographic center of the Hanseatic city of Bremen, a roughly triangular expanse of around 3,484 square meters that has served the community since the Carolingian era. Framed by an ensemble of architectural treasures, it presents the ornate Weser Renaissance facade of the medieval Town Hall, the sword-bearing statue of Roland who symbolizes the city's freedom, the elegant Schütting guild house of the merchants, and the twin towers of St. Peter's Cathedral rising just beyond. Repaved in sandstone in the 1830s, the square today buzzes with cafes, market stalls, and street musicians, yet it remains a living monument to the mercantile power and fiercely defended independence that shaped Bremen for eight centuries.
