About this place
Standing on the south side of the Marktplatz, directly opposite the Town Hall, the Schütting is the house of Bremen's merchants, the commercial counterweight to the council's political power. It was built between 1537 and 1538 by the Antwerp master Johann den Buschener, who modelled its sandstone facade on the Renaissance palaces of Flanders, giving the square a distinctly cosmopolitan, mercantile face. For centuries the guild of traders gathered here to strike deals, settle disputes, and govern the affairs of a city that lived by its ships. Since 1849 it has housed Bremen's Chamber of Commerce, and above the main portal glow the words that became the unofficial creed of the whole city. Gutted by fire during the bombing of 1944, the Schütting was faithfully rebuilt by 1956 and remains the beating commercial heart of the old town.
