Königsallee (the 'Kö')

Düsseldorf's glamorous luxury boulevard, universally known as the Kö, where designer flagship stores line a tree-shaded canal fed by the little river that gave the city its name.

About this place

Running for roughly a kilometre through the heart of the city, the Königsallee is Düsseldorf's most prestigious address and one of Europe's great shopping streets. Laid out between 1802 and 1804 after the old fortifications were demolished, it is built around the Kö-Graben, a broad canal some thirty metres wide, flanked by rows of plane and chestnut trees and crossed by elegant bridges. The eastern bank glitters with the flagship boutiques of the world's leading fashion and jewellery houses, while the calmer western side is home to banks, offices and historic hotels. Once known humbly as the Chestnut Avenue, it earned its royal name in 1848 after a Prussian king was pelted with manure here, and today it remains the confident, cosmopolitan showpiece of a city that adores its style.
