About this place
Unveiled in 1906 after five years of construction, the Hamburg Bismarck Monument by sculptor Hugo Lederer and architect Emil Schaudt depicts the Iron Chancellor not as a statesman but as a Roland, the medieval guardian of a city's freedom and trade. Financed by Hamburg's merchants, the granite giant gazes down the Elbe so that every departing ship once sailed out beneath his watch. The monument is hollow: its plinth conceals chambers that served as an air-raid shelter in the Second World War, their walls still bearing wartime murals.
