Hegelstraße Boulevard

Magdeburg's most beautiful surviving boulevard, a proud parade of ornate Gründerzeit townhouses whose stucco garlands and carved balconies escaped the firestorm that erased almost the entire old town.

About this place

Running quietly parallel to the busy Breiter Weg in the heart of the old town, the Hegelstraße is the finest ensemble of Gründerzeit architecture to survive in Magdeburg. It took shape during the great founding boom that followed German unification, roughly between 1880 and 1920, when prosperous merchants and industrialists lined the new street with confident five story apartment palaces. The grandest facades, dripping with stucco garlands, atlas figures, and ornate window crowns, face the main street, while the side lanes wear noticeably plainer clothes, a social hierarchy written directly into the masonry. Named after the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, the street came through the catastrophic air raid of January 1945 that reduced the surrounding baroque city to rubble, and after decades of decline it was lovingly restored in the 1990s, its ornamental paving relaid to historical patterns. Under monument protection since 1980 and watched over by the Palais am Fürstenwall at its head, it remains a walkable window into the confident, gilded age of the German Empire.
