Rhine Promenade (Fischtorplatz)

A breezy riverside walkway where the old town meets the wide silver sweep of the Rhine. Named after a long vanished medieval fish gate, it is Mainz's favourite spot to watch the barges drift by.

About this place

Fischtorplatz opens the old town directly onto the Rhine, marking the point where the Adenauer riverbank hands over to the Stresemann bank. Its name recalls the Fischtor, a Gothic gate built around 1200 that guarded the city's medieval harbour and sheltered a busy fish market until it was torn down in 1847 to straighten the waterfront. Today green lawns, wide paths, benches and boat docks invite you to slow down, while the nearby Fischtorbrunnen fountain keeps the memory of the fishmongers alive. In summer the promenade becomes the city's open air living room, complete with a sandy river beach, riverside bars and the great Johannisnacht festival, a fittingly relaxed place to end a tour of Mainz.
