St. Peter's Church (Alter Peter)

Munich's oldest parish church, affectionately nicknamed 'Alter Peter' or 'Old Peter'. Its slender tower rises just steps from Marienplatz and offers one of the finest panoramic views in the entire city.

About this place

St. Peter's is where Munich began. Long before the city was officially founded in 1158, monks settled on this small rise called the Petersbergl, and a church has stood on the spot ever since, making it the oldest parish church in the city. The current building blends Gothic bones with a lavish Baroque and Rococo interior, crowned by a high altar whose golden figure of Saint Peter was carved by the great medieval sculptor Erasmus Grasser. Inside a glass coffin you will even find the jewel-encrusted skeleton of Saint Munditia, brought from the Roman catacombs in 1675. The 91-metre tower, beloved by locals as 'Alter Peter', was gutted during the bombing raids of 1944 and 1945, yet Münchners rebuilt it stone by stone from old photographs, finishing the work only in the year 2000. Today its 306-step climb rewards visitors with sweeping views that reach all the way to the Alps on a clear day.
