About this place
The port of Alicante has been the lifeblood of the city since antiquity, and today it blends a working commercial and cruise port with a lively leisure marina right at the edge of the old town. The waterfront here is a broad, palm-lined expanse where yachts bob in the marina, great cruise ships dock to disgorge their passengers, and locals and visitors stroll, dine and gather, especially in the warm evenings. The port has hosted the start of the Volvo Ocean Race, the great round-the-world yacht race, and has a museum devoted to it. From the quays there are fine views back toward the city, the Explanada and, rising above it all, the castle of Santa Bárbara on its hill. Bustling, sunny and open to the sea, the port is the natural gateway to Alicante and a fitting place to begin.
