Casa Lis

A dazzling Art Nouveau mansion built against the old city walls, its courtyard a canopy of brilliant stained glass, now a museum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco treasures.

About this place

The Casa Lis is a striking departure from the golden Gothic and Baroque stone of the rest of Salamanca, a flamboyant Art Nouveau, or modernista, mansion built in 1905 for a wealthy local industrialist with a taste for the modern. Set dramatically against the southern edge of the old Roman city walls, overlooking the river, it is an exuberant confection of iron and, above all, coloured glass. Its glory is its interior courtyard, roofed and walled with a dazzling canopy of brilliant stained glass that floods the space with jewel-like coloured light, one of the most photographed interiors in the city. Today the house is the Museo Art Nouveau y Art Déco, displaying a glittering private collection of decorative arts from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, porcelain figures, bronzes, jewellery, glassware and a famous collection of French porcelain dolls, a glamorous and surprising counterpoint to the ancient city outside.
