About this place
Rising directly across the street from the Casa de las Conchas, La Clerecía is the great Baroque complex of the Jesuit order in Salamanca, built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its imposing church, with a towering Baroque facade flanked by two great bell towers, dominates this part of the old town, and behind it lie the college buildings and a magnificent cloister, around which the Pontifical University of Salamanca now operates. For the visitor, the great attraction is the chance to climb one of the twin towers, an experience marketed as the Scala Coeli, the stair to heaven, which leads up past the bells to a high gallery with breathtaking panoramic views over the golden rooftops of Salamanca, the cathedral, and the Casa de las Conchas directly below. Grand, powerful and a little austere, La Clerecía is a monument to the educational might of the Jesuits.
