About this place
The Hospital de la Santa Caridad is one of the finest Baroque ensembles in Seville and still functions, as it has for over three centuries, as a home caring for the elderly and the poor. It was refounded in the 1660s by Miguel de Mañara, a wealthy Sevillian nobleman who, after a dissolute youth, underwent a profound religious conversion and devoted his fortune and his life to charity. He is sometimes cited as an inspiration for the legend of Don Juan. Mañara commissioned the greatest artists of the Sevillian golden age to decorate the hospital's church with a powerful meditation on death, charity and salvation. Here hang masterpieces by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and the chillingly macabre allegories of death by Juan de Valdés Leal, among them a painting of a decaying corpse beneath the words In the Blink of an Eye.
