Promenade des Anglais

Nice's legendary palm lined seafront sweeping along the Baie des Anges, with its famous blue chairs facing the turquoise sea. It is the glittering symbol of the French Riviera and the perfect place to begin.

About this place

The Promenade des Anglais is the most famous seafront in France, a graceful curve of pavement running for roughly seven kilometres from the airport to the headland of Castle Hill along the Baie des Anges, the Bay of Angels. Its story begins with the English aristocrats who from the late eighteenth century came to winter in the mild Riviera sun. In the bitter winter of 1820, when hardship filled the city with the unemployed, the Reverend Lewis Way of the local English colony raised funds to pay them to build a path along the shore. The Nicois named it the Camin deis Angles, the road of the English, and after Nice joined France in 1860 the name was translated into the Promenade des Anglais we know today. Lined with palms, grand Belle Epoque hotels and rows of blue chairs, it remains the beating symbol of the Riviera.
