Hellbrunn — Salzburg's Playful Palace Park
Water-powered wonders, the Sound of Music gazebo and a hilltop finale.
What's the walk about?
Four hundred years ago, Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus built Hellbrunn for one purpose: fun. This walk lets you in on the joke — completely free, no ticket needed. Stand in the Baroque courtyard and watch soaked, laughing visitors stumble out of the famous trick fountains. Step up to the glass gazebo where 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' was filmed for The Sound of Music. Then trade the crowds for the grand tree-lined Hellbrunner Allee, the storybook manor of Schloss Emslieb, mirror-calm ponds and a Mechanical Theatre powered by nothing but flowing water — and if you dare, a barefoot splash in the free Kneipp pool. The finale: a gentle climb to the Monatsschlössl, where the whole park unrolls beneath you with Salzburg on the horizon.
