Hallstatt Highlights — A Lakeside World Heritage Village
White gold, a glassy lake and the most photographed village in the Alps.
What's the walk about?
Welcome to Hallstatt, a tiny village pinned between a glassy alpine lake and a steep salt mountain in Austria's Salzkammergut. For more than 7,000 years, one thing has shaped this place: salt, the 'white gold' that made a remote mountain hamlet famous across the ancient world and earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. On this easy lakeshore stroll we'll trace that story from south to north, gazing up at the legendary salt mine, the medieval Rudolfstower and the dizzying Skywalk perched high above us, then wander past a tumbling waterfall, pastel houses on the Market Square, the slender lakeside churches and the solemn Bone House. We end at the viewpoint that launched a million photographs. Let the scenery and the salt carry you along.
