Dresden 1933-1945: Dictatorship, Firestorm, Remembrance
A sober walk through the Altstadt tracing Nazi tyranny, the persecution of Dresden's Jews, and the catastrophic 1945 firestorm.
What's the walk about?
Welcome to a sober and necessary walk through Dresden's Altstadt, tracing the city's darkest chapter. Beneath the Baroque splendour lies the story of the Nazi dictatorship under Gauleiter Martin Mutschmann, the persecution of Dresden's Jewish community, and the catastrophic firestorm of 13 to 15 February 1945. From the Neues Rathaus to the Altmarkt, where thousands of the dead were burned on pyres, and on to the Frauenkirche that rose again from its ruins, this route asks us to look honestly at tyranny, loss, and remembrance. Please walk with respect for the tens of thousands of victims whose memory this city carries.
